"A rising tide lifts all boats" - John F. Kennedy
Being a part of a community in one way or another has been so important to me on a personal level and for my business. I can't really imagine where'd I be without the friendships I've made and the net that has been woven beneath me by the incredible individuals that make up the various communities I've come to call home.
While community is a non-negotiable for me and something I've run towards with open arms in all seasons of my life, I've noticed that it doesn't always come so easily for others. Walking into an unfamiliar setting, with unfamiliar faces and willingly open up about your deepest fears or biggest dreams or fiery passions can be downright intimidating and overwhelming. If you're saying “preach girl!” right about now, then I want you to hang in there with me and keep reading.
It takes a VILLAGE to do life. You cannot do it on your own. I don't care how many personality characteristics you share with superwoman, you simply can't do life on your own. And I'm talking ALL parts of life. Your business, family, new healthy fitness lifestyle, your walk with Christ - all the parts. Boy, have I learned that this year in huge ways.
Having a community that truly cares about you, listens to you, picks you up when you fall, cheers you on when you don't believe in yourself and becomes more like family than friends can do wonders for your soul and your life. This is why you need to take that leap of faith, step out of your comfort zone and find a local community that speaks to you. And the community you find may not look the same as someone else's but as long as it serves you well and you can serve others through it, then that's all that matters!
If you're curious about what community could look like in your life, I'm going to share a peek at what community looks like in mine.
For my creative entrepreneur heart, I joined the Northern New Jersey: Tuesdays Together group started by the Rising Tide Society. Once a month, about 20 of us, all creative entrepreneurs or small business owners, join together in a member’s home or a local spot to talk about a specific topic whether it be goal setting, blogging and SEO, social media, systems and organization, etc. We share stories, drink wine, talk about our struggles and fears, and laugh our butts off. After only being apart of the group for one year, I've nurtured some of my most cherished friendships, have grown so much on a personal and professional level and have started my business off strong by doing work that I absolutely love for friends that have turned clients.
For my journey as a Christian woman and wife, I recently joined a small group through my church, Jacksonville Chapel. We are a group of about 7-8 women in our 20s and 30s who are all looking to deepen our faith and get to know the Lord more intimately. This group has turned my world upside down and I'm so thankful to have Christian women that I can lean on for support, prayer and guidance in my own journey. We meet once a week to pray, worship and dig deep into the scripture.
For my health and fitness lifestyle, I’m apart of Kayla Itsines’ BBG community. While this is mainly an online community and I have started and stopped her program several times, I've found so much motivation and inspiration from the other woman who have decided to make the commitment of becoming strong, confident, and healthy. I know that this community will be there for me as I go through the struggles of a changing lifestyle and my need for accountability when my motivation weakens.
Whether in person or online, there are so many ways to connect with like-minded individuals and souls that are going through similar experiences just like you!
My challenge for you is to do some research and find a community that speaks to you. To guide you in this challenge, I've created a checklist that you can download below to help you maximize your community experience!
What is your favorite community you are apart of? What area of your life do you think would most benefit from joining a community?
